Students urged to embrace entrepreneurship
Students at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) have been challenged to view entrepreneurship as a central pillar of career development, beyond traditional employment paths.
Delivering a public lecture on Entrepreneurship and Business Management [on Monday, April 27], Precious Chisi, Managing Director of Perfect Property Solutions Limited, said many people still equate careers with jobs in banks, engineering firms, audit companies, government institutions, or multinational corporations.

“Entrepreneurship is not just about starting businesses. It is about creating value, identifying opportunities, solving problems, and making impact,” Chisi emphasized.
He noted that the world is changing rapidly, making the traditional perception that education equals employment less predictable.

“Students must begin to think about how they can create opportunities rather than rely solely on jobs,” he added.
Chisi said entrepreneurship is about value generation and impact, stressing that entrepreneurs must identify gaps in the market and provide solutions that create value, which in turn drives employment, innovation, improved service delivery, and economic growth.
He stressed that successful entrepreneurs do not simply chase money but focus on creating lasting value for society.
Highlighting the key enablers of entrepreneurial success, Chisi pointed to discipline as fundamental.
He urged aspiring entrepreneurs to stay focused, be consistent, follow through on commitments, and remain resilient. According to Chisi, discipline determines productivity, growth, and sustainability, making it a cornerstone of any successful business journey.
In Malawi, youth unemployment is a major challenge with World Bank data showing around 6.9% of young people aged between 15 and 24 unemployed, while local surveys suggest up to 66% of Malawians aged between 15 and 35 are jobless and actively seeking work.
