Maba partners Blantyre City in cleanliness drive

Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) has partnered Blantyre City Council as part of a campaign to improve cleanliness in the commercial city.

The association’s president Francis Kadzakalowa said in an interview on Saturday that as part of the drive, they have organised a three-day elite men’s and women’s boxing championship whose finals are scheduled for the Independence Arch on Independence Day.

He said the qualifiers will run from July 4 to 5 at Blantyre Sports Arena, formerly Blantyre Youth Centre.

“The boxing tournament is part of an initiative dubbed Keep Your City Clean championed by Blantyre City Council Mayor councillor Isaac Jomo Osman,” said Kadzakalowa.

He said they are delighted to partner the mayor “in this noble cause to advocate the cleanliness of our city”.

Kadzakalowa said in the headline bouts, Parson Ledson will take on Mphatso Makwinja, Richard Wasili will face Kingsley Justin, Normn Mwale will be up against Mike Saidi and Fortune Macheka will fight Gibson Parenje.

In the women’s category, the headline bout will be between Doreen Vitaliano and Rehema Msusa.

In a separate interview, Osman said they are excited to use boxing to promote cleanliness.

“We are appealing to the corporate world and individuals who believe in sports as an economical and entertainment activity to support this noble cause and also support our boxers,” he said.

The mayor said the event will also be used to celebrate Malawi’s 62nd Independence anniversary.
