Chirwa, Bullets part ways

FCB Nyasa Bullets have parted ways with interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa following the team’s slow start to the 2026/27 FDH Bank Premiership season.

The People’s Team confirmed the development in a statement issued yesterday, saying the two parties mutually agreed to end their relationship.

The statement reads in part: “FCB Nyasa Bullets and Gilbert Chirwa have agreed to part ways regarding his position as head coach.

“The club sincerely thanks Chirwa for his contribution and wishes him every success in his future endeavours. Further communication regarding the head coach position will be issued in due course.”

The development comes as Bullets are interviewing five coaches, one local and four expatriates, for the position which fell vacant following the departure of Peter Mponda just before the end of the 2025/26 season.

Chirwa was not available for comment yesterday, but in an earlier interview he had indicated that he was ready to move on.

Bullets chief executive officer Albert Chigoga in an interview yesterday said assistant coach Heston Munthali will take charge of the team on an interim basis.

“We will unveil the new head coach after the international break,” he said.

In his short stint as interim head coach since December 2025, Chirwa guided the People’s Team to the Castel Challenge Cup title but lost to Mighty Wanderers in the NBS Bank Charity Shield in April.

A slow start to the 2026/27 season has seen the People’s Team collect nine points from a possible 15 in five matches and on position six on the log table.

Under Chirwa, Bullets drew against Civil Service United, Blue Eagles and Red Lions and registered victories over Mafco and rivals Mighty Wanderers.

They face Moyale Barracks on Sunday at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza.
