Nomads, silver held

Mighty Wanderers remain at the summit of the FDH Bank Premiership after forcing a one-all draw against Ekhaya FC at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

Silver Strikers also fluffed a chance of rising to the top of the 16-team log-table with another 1-1 stalemate against Capital City rivals and hosts Civil Service United at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Interestingly, in both matches, Wanderers and Silver had to survive a scare after coming from behind to restore parity in the dying minutes of their clashes.

Currently, Wanderers remain on top of the table on superior goal difference as they are tied on 14 points with second-placed Silver from seven games each while Blue Eagles, who are expected to play their seventh match this afternoon against Karonga United at Nankhaka in Lilongwe, are third with 13 points.

In another fixture yesterday, Mafco recorded their second win in seven outings after thrashing strugglers Goshen City Dedza Dynamos 3-0 at Chitowe Stadium. They have moved five places up to seventh with nine points.

At Mpira Stadium, Ekhaya FC broke the deadlock just before the half-time break through Blessings Malinda before Wanderers restored parity just before the final whistle through Promise Kamwendo.

“This was a tough game but we are happy that we salvaged a point to remain on top,” said Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira.

“We were second on the ball for the better part of the first half but I thank the players for putting up a gallant fight in the second half.”

Ekhaya FC coach Enos Chatama said it was disappointing to concede in the dying minutes after leading for a long time.

In similar fashion at Civo Stadium, Civil Service stabbed early in the 15th minute through Righteous Banda. Silver had to fight hard before equalising in the 66th minute with Charles Chipala’s strike.

Silver assistant coach Mapopa Msukwa said Civil’s early goal put them at an advantage as they had pressure to equalise.

“All the same, a draw is not too bad considering the nature of the game we had.”

Civil assistant coach Emmanuel Zoya said they were happy to have not lost the match.
