Envoy says no private recruiters for Israel jobs

Malawi Ambassador to Israel David Bisnowaty has warned Malawians seeking employment in that country against using private recruitment agencies and individuals claiming to facilitate their processes.

The envoy told Malawians working in Israel on Monday that the embassy had learned of agencies and individuals recruiting people and conducting orientation sessions for prospective workers and charging as much as K2.5 million.

Bisnowaty on Tuesday confirmed in a telephone interview that he visited Malawian farm workers in Mevo Horon in the West Bank in Israel and briefed them on the same.

He said there are no private entities involved in the current recruitment arrangement, which is strictly a government-to-government (G-to-G) agreement.

“The government of Malawi will recruit people and send them to Israel. Private recruiters are not allowed, and whoever is doing that is, according to us, acting illegally,” said Bisnowaty.

Meanwhile, a Malawian farm worker in Israel, who requested anonymity, said the working conditions are “not bad” and that workers earn between K6 million and K7 million per month.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesperson Charles Nkhalamba said in a telephone interview on Tuesday that the government’s arrangement remains G-2-G and does not involve private agencies.

In April 2024, Malawi and Israel signed a G-to-G labour export agreement under which Malawi was expected to send 3 000 workers to Israel.
