Asimenye wins 400-metre gold in Portugal

Multi-talented athlete Asimenye Simwaka on Saturday won gold in 400 metres at the Portuguese Open Championship after crossing the finishing line in 53.20 seconds.

In an interview yesterday, Asimenye said she was excited with her feat, describing it as a big motivation in the countdown to the  Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“I am happy with my performance today. It shows that the intensive training I am having here in Portugal is perfect,”

The 28-year-old is in Portugal undergoing an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

She is also tuning up for the  Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2 in Scotland. 

Asimenye has also been named in the Scorchers provisional squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals which runs from July 26 to August 16 in Morocco.

Athletics Malawi president Kondwani Chamwala said they are excited with the athlete’s feat.

“It is encouraging coming just a few weeks before the upcoming Commonwealth Games. It shows that Asimenye is benefiting from the training she is undergoing in Portugal,” he said.
