Police probe death of doctor in her house
Police in Blantyre have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) medical doctor Atughanile Chomo who was found dead in her house in Mount Pleasant yesterday.
The 28-year-old worked at QECH’s Accident and Emergency Department and had been at the facility for about six months.

In an interview yesterday, South West Region Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa confirmed the incident, but said officers were still on the ground conducting investigations and that preliminary findings were not yet available.
“Our officers are still on the ground conducting investigations and we will provide more details based on their findings,” she said.
Yesterday, family members, her fellow medical professionals and other mourners gathered at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) funeral parlour in Blantyre where a post-mortem was being conducted.
In an interview at Kuhes, a family member who asked not to be named said they were devastated by the loss.
“She achieved so much, was still young and we expected she would continue to inspire us,” said the relation.
In a telephone interview, QECH director Patrick Kamalo described Chomo as a hardworking young doctor whose death has shocked colleagues at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Medical Doctors Union of Malawi (MDUM) and the Women Doctors Association of Malawi (WDAM) have called on the Malawi Police Service to conduct a professional and expeditious investigation.
In a statement issued yesterday, WDAM board chairperson Bridget Msolomba Malewezi described Chomo as a vibrant, dedicated and promising young doctor who served her patients with compassion and excellence.
MDUM president Henry Makowa said if investigations establish that any criminal acts were involved, those responsible should be brought to justice without delay.
According to her family, Chomo graduated from Kuhes in 2024 with a bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degree. Chomo’s death comes about eight months after 33-year-old consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Victoria Bobe was shot dead at her home in Chigumula, Blantyre on November 17 2025.
Chomo hailed from Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa.
