The Malawi National Netball Team head to Scotland for the 2026 Commonwealth Games riding on increased games bonuses and allowances likely to boost their morale.
Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Vitumbiko Gubuduza said in an interview yesterday that the increased allowances are aimed at motivating the Malawi Queens
“There have been recent amendments to the allowances which were long overdue and speaks towards the improved performance we want to see in the team,” she said.

She said: “Foreign day allowances have been increased to a minimum of $80 [about 140 080] each from $60 [about K105 060] each.
“For each win in an international ranking game over a team ranked above us, Queens will get $80 [about 140 080] each as a bonus while for international ranking games against a team ranked below us, Queens will get $40 dollars [about K70 040].
“These bonuses used to be K50 000 each for any win, friendly or ranking game. We have maintained the K50 000 allowance for friendly games only.”
One of the senior players, who asked for anonymity, commended NAM for prioritising player welfare.
She said: “I cannot speak on record without the authorities’ approval, but what I can say is that in recent times, NAM has been trying its best to motivate us in several ways and it can only get better.
“That said, with or without incentives, we will try our best to do well because you bever know, some of us can be spotted by top teams from overseas. We also want to do well for our nation.”
The Queens, who are ranked ninth in the world, are in Pool A alongside top-ranked Australia, England, who are ranked third, fifth-ranked South Africa, Tonga, who are eighth and 14th ranked Northern Ireland.
Malawi will face South Africa in their opening match on July 25 before taking on Northern Ireland the following day. Their third match will be against England on July 27 and Australia on July 28.
The Queens’ final group match will be against Tonga on July 30.
The team arrived in London through Heathrow Airport yesterday before proceeding to Glasgow from where they will travel to Manchester today for warm-up games against England men’s team and New Zealand.
