Digital system to boost revenue in Kasungu

Kasungu District Council director of finance Martin Mbaya says the introduction of a digital revenue collection system in the district’s markets will increase locally generated revenue and improve accountability.

Presenting electronic ticketing devices to revenue collectors at Nkhamenya on Wednesday, he said the new system will enable the council to monitor revenue collections in real time and ensure that money collected from markets is banked immediately through bank agents.

Said Mbaya: “Previously, revenue collectors were using manual receipt books and could keep hard cash for up to two weeks before remitting it to the council for banking.

“With the digital system, the money will be banked immediately after collection. This will improve efficiency.”

During a test exercise at Nkhamenya Market, the council collected about K90 000 in a day, compared to an average of about K17 000 per day under the manual system.

Mbaya said the results show the potential of the digital system in improving revenue collection.

Nkhamenya Market chairperson John Mafuta welcomed the introduction of the digital system.

“We have welcomed this development because we have to move with technology. Improved revenue collection will help us raise more resources for improving our markets,” he said.

Revenue collector Chimwemwe Mafuleka also welcomed the digital system, saying it will address challenges associated with the use of manual receipt books.

In the 2026/27 financial year, the council is targeting to collect at least K900 million in locally generated revenue
