The Scorchers are expected to get not less than $30 000 (about K52.5 million) each as appearance fee at the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Malawi National Women’s Football Team qualified for the global showpiece after making it to the top four at the on-going 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
According to the 2023 Women’s World Cup prize structure, every qualified member association got $1.56 million (about K2.7 billion) “for qualifying and competing in the group stage”.
On player allocation, Fifa states that each player got $30 000 at group stage, but the fee doubled in round of 16 and went up to $270 000 each player for the champions.
But with Fifa president Gianni Infantino having announced the plan to equal them men’s 2026 World Cup prize money with the upcoming 2027 women’s event, the Scorchers stand to gain more.
At the 2026 Fifa Men’s World Cup, each qualifying member association got $10 million (about K17.5 billion) in qualification and participation fee, plus an extra $2.5 million in preparation funding, bringing the minimum total payout for simply making the tournament to $12.5 million (about K20.8 billion) per team.
France-based Scorchers’ captain Tabitha Chawinga said while the financial incentive will be a big motivation for the players, the priority will be to impress at the tournament.
“The girls deserve the money, they worked hard to qualify, but as I said, the most important thing will be the exposure because there can be no better platform than the World Cup and we thank God Almighty for His blessings,” she said.
