Malawi’s impressive run ended with a 3-0 defeat to Cameroon in the final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

In his message to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya, Motsepe praised the Scorchers for their gallant display throughout the tournament and highlighted their qualification for the global showpiece in Brazil.

“Congratulations on the outstanding performances of The Scorchers at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 and for qualifying for the Fifa Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027,” Motsepe wrote.

The achievement marks a major milestone for Malawian women’s football, with the Scorchers securing their place at their first-ever Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Haiya in an interview said despite falling short in the final, Malawi’s run to the continental final has further underlined the rapid progress of the team and placed the country among Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

He said: “This achievement is further evidence that our deliberate investment in girls’ and women’s football is bearing fruit. We will continue investing in our young girls, strengthening the development pathway from grassroots to elite football and creating opportunities for the next generation.

“For our maiden Wafcon appearance, the Scorchers have reached the Final, finished as Africa’s second-best team and, most importantly, qualified for the Fifa Women’s World Cup for the first time in our history. This is an extraordinary achievement that deserves to be celebrated. Finishing as runners-up is a bonus to what has already been a historic campaign.”

Cameroon received $2 million in prize money for winning the trophy while Scorchers got $750 000 as runners up.

Scorchers striker Temwa Chawinga also clinched the Golden Boot with five goals and two assists.
