RFA commits K54bn for road works in 7 councils
The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) has committed K54 billion towards an intensive six-month road rehabilitation project spanning seven district and city councils nationwide.
The funds will target critical road networks in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Luchenza, Kasungu, Zomba, and Mangochi.

Speaking during the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the RFA and council representatives in Lilongwe, RFA board chairperson Noel Mkulichi stressed that consistent disbursements from the fuel levy remain vital for national road construction and ongoing maintenance.
“We hope the past situation where the Roads Fund Administration received no funding at all will not recur,” Mkulichi said.
“Securing this fuel levy is essential because it guarantees that we can maintain our roads moving forward.”
Blantyre Mayor and Malawi Local Government Association (Malga) chairperson Jomo Osman urged local leaders to enforce strict quality control, warning against shoddy workmanship that leads to premature deterioration.
“It often feels as though we are executing temporary fixes rather than building infrastructure that endures for years,” Osman remarked.
“My appeal to fellow mayors and chairpersons is to provide active oversight on the ground to inspect the quality of structures being built. It is unacceptable that roads constructed just three years ago are already falling apart.”
Meanwhile, Lilongwe City Council (LCC) director of engineering services Julius Tsogolani confirmed that the capital has secured K15 billion of the total allocation.
He assured residents that key arterial routes, including roads in Areas 43, 47, 49, and Presidential Way, will be rehabilitated within six months in partnership with the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).
“We have secured K15 billion for this financial year and executed an MoU alongside a formal contract,” Tsogolani said.
“We have negotiated a schedule with the Malawi Defence Force, and we are confident that their discipline and operational efficiency will enable us to complete the works within the designated timeframe.”
