Sometimes it is better to choose yourself

Oftentimes, women are subjected to numerous forms of abuse in their respective homes. These abuses do not only physically hurt them, but emotionally as well. It would seem abuses in the households have eased as times have changed, but this isn’t the situation.

Sadly, in some marriages, the abuses have been normalised; hence, some women opt to still remain in that marriage than to walk away.

There are various reasons why women choose to stay in that particular marriage with the most common reason being the presence of children. Most of the time women stick to the belief that where there are children, she shouldn’t walk away no matter the abuses or toxicity of that marriage. Actually, that is what society has made women believe since time immemorial.

Sometimes, what also compels women to remain in that particular marriage is the financial status. Most women don’t have a financial backing, as such, once they leave the marriage, they will be stranded; they will have nowhere to go. In some instances, women choose not to let go of an abusive marriage for fear of damaging their reputation in society, or because society will mock them.

They stick to the notion that ‘all men are the same’. At least that is how society has shaped people’s perceptions.

But as women hold on to such abusive marriages, the hurt they endure gradually eats them inside; their mental health slowly deteriorates and the emotional wounds deepen with time. No one really cares until something unfortunate happens.

But sometimes, it is better to choose yourself instead of trying to ‘adapt’ to a situation that is slowly killing you. Sometimes walking away when things get way too toxic is the best solution, other than still trying to fight for something that will badly affect you. Women shouldn’t be manipulated into thinking that walking away is being selfish, no.

It simply means you have taken the right path of acceptance and peace. Getting out of marriage in a body bag because of abuse is hurtful to the children and relatives one leaves behind.

Sometimes marriage can indeed work after abuse, while sometimes it may not. Either way, marriage wasn’t meant for abuse; it was meant to be a comfort zone when the world seems to be falling apart or the odds seem against you.
