Minister says Region 5 Youth Games torch symbolises unity
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata has said the Africa Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Youth Games torch symbolises unity, hope and friendship among participating countries.
The minister said this on Saturday when he received the torch from Mozambican officials at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe in the build-up to the regional games scheduled for December 4 to 13 2026 in Maputo.

He said the torch helps in promoting unity among young people across the region as it travels through the participating countries.
Said Gangata: “This torch is not just a piece of metal. It carries a powerful flame. This flame represents unity, hope, and friendship across our region.
“As it travels through our beautiful countries, it connects our young people. It reminds us that we are one big African family, joined together by the power of sports.”
He encouraged athletes, coaches and sports officials to work hard, assuring them of government support as they prepare to represent Malawi at the games.
“To our young athletes, coaches, and sports officials you are the heartbeat of these games. Sports teach us discipline, teamwork and how to stay strong in the face of challenges. The government believes in you. We are fully committed to investing in your future and supporting your talents,” said the minister.
Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson Jim Kalua said Malawian athletes are well prepared for the games and expressed confidence in their readiness.
“From the onset, we have been serious on our preparations and are well prepared,” he said.
Torch carrier Francisco da Conceição from Mozambique said as a host country, they are preparing extensively for the games.
“I know that the government, the members of the federation, the athletes, the media are all committed. We are working very hard to deliver memorable games,” he said.
