Police on Wednesday arrested local musician Wendy Harawa at Kamuzu Stadium in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre.
Both Wendy and Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed this in separate interviews on Thursday.
Gondwa said the artist was arrested through a check-and-arrest order from Mwanza Police on allegations that she took money for a show at Mwanza Hotel in April last year and never performed.
“I can confirm with you, the artist was arrested, but is now out on bail. Owner of Mwanza Motel Mercy Kaminjolo complained to police that the artist pocketed money amounting to K240 000 (about $600) to hold a show at the motel. She did not perform as agreed,” he said.
While admitting the arrest, Wendy said she does not understand why Kaminjolo took that direction.
“I was approached by Kaminjolo to invite Orga Family of Zambia to perform at the hotel, but the trip was affected by fuel problems and we arrived late,” she said.
Gondwa said Wendy paid the whole sum on the day of arrest.
