ACB stops recruitment of healthcare workers

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has ordered the Ministry of Health to stop the recruitment process of health surveillance assistants (HSAs) and other cadres pending a probe into allegations of corruption.

In an order signed by ACB acting director Gerald Hillary Chilomba, the graft-busting agency has advised the ministry that it has launched an investigation for an alleged offence under the Corrupt Practices Act (CPA).

Reads the order in part: “Take notice that you shall not, without my written consent or otherwise, deal with or allow to proceed with recruitment of health surveillance assistant positions at all local councils in the Republic of Malawi.”

In a separate notice dated May 22 2025, ACB principal public relations officer Egrita Ndala also announced a restriction order to

Local Government Commission stopping the recruitment of disease control surveillance assistants, statistical clerks and hospital attendants pending conclusion of another investigation.

Ministry of Health Principal Secretary Dr. Samson Mndolo said he was out of office, as such, could not comment on the communications from ACB.

The restriction orders come after the ministry in conjunction with the commission on April 5 2025 advertised vacancies for the posts of HSAs, statistical clerks and hospital attendants. Shortlisted candidates were supposed to undergo written interviews on May 24 2025.
