ActionAid pumps K22m into Chitipa

ActionAid Malawi has donated K22.4 million to four community-based organisations working in governance, women’s rights and education in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nthalire in Chitipa District.

Speaking during the presentation of the funds to Malumbo, Chigwirizano, Maukako Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and Nthalire Women Forum last week, ActionAid head of programmes and policy Peter Pangani commended the partners for helping to eliminate early marriages and other forms of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nthalire.

have the power

He said since the organisation started working with the four CBOs, prevalence rate of early marriages has declined in Nthalire from 10 percent in 2007 to three percent this year.

‘‘We have seen a decrease in early marriages due to the increased awareness on the need for families to send girls to school. But also, through the Back-To-School Campaign, girls are encouraged to return to school after pregnancy,” said Pangani.

The organisation also donated 60 desks, 5 400 notebooks and nine footballs to Kapelemela, Mwenje and Benthu primary schools.

Speaking at the event, Chitipa District Council chairperson Maxwell Kayira asked other organisations to come and work in Chitipa, claiming many non-governmental organization shun working in the district.
