Aliens registering in Dedza
Electoral stakeholders in Dedza are grappling with a situation where several Mozambicans have flooded voter registration centres to register for the 2014 Tripartite Elections.
According to Dedza National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) officer Patrick Siwinda, the problem has been noted particularly in Bembeke Ward.
According to him, police last week arrested some Mozambicans, but others were allowed to register after they obtained identification letters from Malawian village heads.
Meanwhile, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa, while not necessarily acknowledging the problem, has warned chiefs against giving false witness.
“MEC has been encouraging the chiefs not to give letters to anyone who is not qualified to register as this is a crime and the penalty is a fine of up to K500 000 (US$1,377) or imprisonment up to two years,” he said.
Following a tip-off, police rushed to some of the centres and managed to apprehend some Mozambicans while others were turned back.
Surprisingly, some of the Mozambicans produced valid Malawi passports and valid 2009 voter registration cards to validate their eligibility, according to Siwinda.
As of Friday, Dedza police had arrested four people suspected to be Mozambicans and officer- in-charge Sladge Yusuf said the situation is now under control.
Meanwhile, one more Mozambican was arrested at Magareta Centre for causing commotion after being rejected thrice.
According to the facts presented in this article, those people are Malawians not Mozambicans.
