Anglican Church urges APM to lead with unity, healing

The Anglican Church in Malawi has called on President-elect Peter Mutharika to prioritise unity, inclusivity and reconciliation as he prepares to assume office.

In a congratulatory letter, the church urged Mutharika to embrace all Malawians regardless of political affiliation, creed, ethnicity or region  and to lead with a spirit of peace and national purpose.

The President elect: Mutharika.

Anglican Council in Malawi chairperson Bishop William Mchombo said the country is looking to Mutharika to be a unifying figure who can foster a shared identity and drive inclusive development.

“We urge the incoming administration and the Democratic Progressive Party [DPP] to resist the temptation of vengeance or retribution,” he stated. “Instead, let the focus be on healing, development and  national transformation.”

Mchombo, who also heads the Upper Shire Diocese, commended outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for his statesmanship in conceding defeat, describing the gesture as a powerful demonstration of democratic maturity.

“Chakwera’s decision showed he placed the interests of the nation above his own,” he said, encouraging other leaders to emulate such humility and patriotism.

The Anglican Church also extended praise to Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for overseeing what it described as one of the most peaceful elections in the country’s history.

“We are deeply encouraged by the commission’s unwavering commitment to impartiality, non-partisanship and justice throughout the electoral process,” the church wrote in its letter to Mtalimanja. “Your leadership has demonstrated integrity and resilience, ensuring that the democratic will of Malawians was respected and upheld through a transparent, credible and peaceful election.”

Meanwhile, the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has also lauded the September 16 2025 General Election, describing it as a model for democratic conduct not only in Malawi, but Africa.

Nice executive director Gray Kalindekafe expressed satisfaction with the peaceful polls.

“We have been engaging various stakeholders,  including political party leaders, to promote peace before, during and after the elections. We are pleased that our efforts have yielded positive results,” he said.

As Malawi transitions into a new chapter, voices from civil society and faith institutions continue to emphasize the importance of unity, accountability, and inclusive governance.
