BB sniff 16th title

Nyasa Big Bullets are within sniffing distance of their 16th TNM Super League title following their 5-1 victory of Sable Farming at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre yesterday.

The mastermind of yesterday’s victory was man-of-the-match Babatunde Adepoju who netted four goals to return to the top of scorers chart with 16 goals, overtaking Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ Muhammad Sulumba who has 15.

Babatunde celebrates scoring his third goal

With Blue Eagles having lost 1-0 to Kamuzu Barracks (KB) to be displaced on second position by the Malawi Defence Force side, the gap between the top two teams is now at 10 points.

Bullets have 61 points from 25 matches while KB have 51 having played a game more.

But the scoreline from Blantyre could be deceiving as if Sable were pushover in the midweek fixture when it was a balanced affair, especially in the first half.

Missing some key players such Patrick Mwawungulu, Gomezgani Chirwa, Precious Sambani, Chimwemwe Idana, Lanjesi Nkhoma and goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba due to injuries, meant coach Kalisto Pasuwa had to rely on fringe players.

Sable, who are stuck in relegation zone, knew they had nothing to lose, but everything to gain.

No wonder in the 19th minute they took a lead through Michael Tetteh whose low shot in the box swept past Bullets goalkeeper Clever Mkungula.

But it only took Bullets three minutes to level the scores through Adepoju.

Sable continued dominating but could not take their chances much to the annoyance of coach McDonald Mtetemera.

His frustration was further exacerbeted when Bullets netted their second in the 55th minute through Magombo.

Bullets netted the third and fourth within three minutes through Babatunde.

He was not done yet. The gangly Nigerian forward struck his fourth goal in added on time to wrap up the day.

Pasuwa admitted that they struggled in the first half.

He said: “In the first half there was a lot of confusion in our team. We had to bring in replacements to stabilise the team,”

Mtetemera said he was disappointed with the team’s lack of commitment in the battle against relegation.

He said: “We were tactically poor after a good performance in the first half.”

At Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa, Olson Kanjira scored the lone goal for KB against Eagles.

The Malawi Police Service side are third with 50 points from 25 games.
