Zuza: We need more priests

Newly ordained priests of Chikwawa Diocese have been advised to be exemplary.

Diocese Bishop Peter Musikuwa gave the counsel on Saturday during the ordination of four priests held at St. Michaels Cathedral.

The new priests are Father Danile Makwiti, Mosten Tengani, Peter Mtayamanja, and Kephas Namalonda.

“Priests have to stick to their vows and avoid recklessness, which tarnish our image. Again, priesthood is not an opportunity to accumulate wealth, but serve God and people with love, dedication and perseverance,” said Musikuwa.

Laity council chair, Patrick Chikoti implored the priests not to abandon their calling at the diocese by looking for greener pastures as this disappoints Christians.

His sentiments come when at least three priests from the diocese are reported to have migrated overseas to either study or work without authorisation.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu Diocese Bishop, the Right Reverend Joseph Zuza, is concerned with dwindling numbers of priests in Catholic churches.

He was speaking during another ordination of Father Amos Katumbi at St. Denis Parish in Rumphi recently.

Zuza noted that the response to priesthood was decreasing; a development he said was not synonymous with the rapid growth and expansion of the entire church

He advised youths to take an interest in the service of God rather than flock into marriages.
