Billy Kaunda impresses in three-hour Mibawa gig
Veteran musician-cum-legislator Billy Kaunda took to the Mibawa Multipurpose Hall stage on Saturday night and once again proved that experience is the best teacher.
His stay on stage for three hours nonstop, belting out hit after hit demonstrated maturity and experience in live performances.
Kaunda opened his set with a little-known song titled Mulungu Timutame before performing more popular songs such as Kumidima, Alibe Mawu, Kale Likati Lizibwelera, Agalatiya, Mphinjika, Lupanga and many more.
The artist’s voice was clear as usual.
Dressed in his signature caftan, Kaunda was himself on stage, joking and interacting with fans every now and then.
“I have prepared 35 songs. So, don’t mind my decision to connect song after song. I have been given two hours and with the songs I have prepared, I have to squeeze as many songs as possible,” he said after playing the first six songs.
Without taking a break, the artist took music fans down memory lane with songs from all his albums with fans in the hall singing along to all the songs.
Kaunda was at ease, dancing and jumping up and down with the support of his long-time friend and mentor Captain Kele.
However, during the show, beamed live on Mibawa Television, some fans had problems with Captain Kele’s supporting role.
On social media, Captain Kele trended as the event went on with many asking who he was and why he was acting as the main singer.
Wrote Agness Faiti: “The backing vocalist has even dressed as Billy Kaunda. No, this is not on. One Billy Kaunda at a time please.”
Later on during the show, Kaunda introduced Kele, telling the audience that he was the famous choir master who used to lead choir festivals in Malawi back in the days.
He also introduced the Lilongwe Baptist Church Band backing him which also had Billy Kaunda Junior on the keyboards.
Members of the audience wanted Kaunda Junior to sing, but Kaunda Senior said: “Billy Kaunda Junior plays instruments, he does not sing.”
The performance, which started at 8pm ended at around 11pm, and was sponsored by WS Bet.
