Blantyre Synod goes to polls tomorrow

Blantyre Synod of the CCAP Church will tomorrow hold elections for its general secretary, moderator and vice-moderator on the sidelines of a 34th biennial conference which starts today until Thursday.

Deputy general secretary the Reverend Baxton Maulidi in an interview on the sidelines of a press briefing at Grace Bandawe Conference Centre yesterday said they anticipate holding a free, fair and credible election.

Maulidi: We want unity

He said: “For those that are candidates, our message is that we are serving God, and our God is a God of love and unity. So, we want to remain united as a synod.”

Incumbent synod general secretary the Reverend Billy Gama is seeking re-election.

He will face the Reverend Anderson Juma, the Reverend Paul Mawaya, the Reverend Takuze Chitsulo and the Reverend Brino Chipewa.

In the position of synod moderator, incumbent the Reverend Edna Navaya will seek re-election and will face two contenders.

These include the Reverend Humphreys Zgambo and the Reverend Moses Chitawo.

Incumbent vice-moderator the Reverend Ernest Mphate is also seeking re-election and will be challenged by two contenders. They include the Reverend Annie Kapinda and the Reverend Chimwemwe Mitengo.

Chairperson for the conference James Chuma in a separate interview said 600 delegates will attend the conference while 350 will vote.

“The preparations have been going on very well. We are at the tail end now as we start the conference on September 27 [today]. We have been having meetings way through the year, so the preparations have been very good,” he said.

Nation on Sunday failed to seek comment from both Gama and Navaya yesterday as they could not be reached for comment on their known mobile phone numbers.

Apart from the elections, the synod is expected to deliberate on reports from various churches under its jurisdiction and other issues affecting the country.

While the conference starts today, the official opening ceremony will be held tomorrow morning. The synod elections will be held thereafter.
