Brazil to conduct 1 000 eye surgeries
Brazil’s honorary consul designated to Malawi Breno Nogueira says his government plans to conduct 1 000 eye surgeries for in the country.
Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe yesterday after a closed-door meeting with President Lazarus Chakwera, he said the surgeries will start in about two months.
“We will first conduct an assessment of beneficiaries of this exercise, after which we will put in place logistics on how the surgeries will be conducted,” he said.
Nogueira, himself an eye specialist, said that the Brazilian Consul will take responsibility for associated expenses, including travel and upkeep of the physicians who will come into the country for the surgeries.
Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said there are many people in the country who need the surgery.
“It will be great to see 1 000 people having their sight restored. You will realise that most of the people who are blind in this country reach that status because they didn’t get appropriate treatment,” she said.
Nogueira also announced his government plans to construct an eye surgery in the country, for which he said he would work to mobilise funds from global partners.
