Britam Insurance donates K5 million towards Spelling Bee competition

Britam Insurance Malawi has contributed K5 million towards this year’s Spelling Bee Competition, which is set to be launched on October 25 in Lilongwe.

Speaking on Wednesday during the cheque presentation ceremony, Britam Insurance Malawi chief executive officer, Wales Meja, said the company’s support reflects its commitment to promoting quality education as part of its wider sustainability agenda.

He explained that Britam’s 2024 Sustainability Report emphasizes the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, with education and social impact identified as key pillars for sustainable development.

“Quality education is foundational to progress, and this competition is more than a contest of letters — it is a celebration of literacy, discipline, and courage,” he said.

He added that the donation, though modest, represents an investment in Malawi’s future leaders.

“Our support is a small seed, but in the hands of these young learners, it will grow into forests of knowledge, creativity, and leadership,” he said.

On his part, National Spelling Bee director of operations, Andrew Chikho, hailed Britam for the support, saying it will go a long way in making the competition a success.

“This year’s event will attract 15,000 learners from both government and private primary and secondary schools across the country,” he said.

The Spelling Bee competition aims to improve literacy levels, instill confidence in learners, and inspire academic excellence.
