Bullets open up on Chimbamba long absence
FCB Nyasa Bullets technical panel has clarified the status of Richard Chimbamba, insisting that he remains part of the squad despite missing the last five matches. The 2023 TNM Super League goalkeeper of the season’s continued absence has fuelled rumours of fallout with the Peter Mponda-led technical team. But speaking ahead of today’s clash against Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, assistant coach Gilbert Chirwa dismissed the speculation.
“He is still around,” said the former Bullets defender.
In Chimbamba’s absence, Bullets have used Innocent Nyasulu as first-choice goalkeeper with Austin Chirambo deputising.
The decision has drawn criticism from a section of supporters, especially after Nyasulu conceded 11 goals in 10 matches, including the 3-0 loss to Mighty Wanderers, 3-3 draw with Karonga United and 4-3 win over Civil Service United.
But Chirwa has backed the shot-stopper. “Our first choice goalkeeper is Innocent Nyasaulu. Yes, he sometimes makes mistakes, but in-field players make mistakes as well,” he said.

The Flames legend also acknowledged Bullets’ defensive struggles, saying: “We sat down with the players, did post-mortem and taught the boys how to defend properly. With the way we have prepared, we believe we are going to do good work for the team.”
However, some fans want the technical panel to recall Chimbamba.
One supporter Martin Mgwazo Ndlovu called for a change ahead of today’s match.
He said: “On the goalkeeper, leave Nyasulu on the bench. He’s a good goalie. But he’s that kind just for special games or occasions. Not a regular.
“If there’s someone who is best situated to read and lead the game is the goalkeeper. He sees a goal coming. For that, he should be able not only to position himself to prevent it but marshal his defence as well.
“As matter of course, a goalie should be
able to shout. He should be able to jack his pack up. Not ball-watching. There’s no any room for error in these remaining games. It’s swim or sink.”
Bullets also have experienced goalkeeper Clever Nkungula in their ranks, but he has spent much of the season on the side-lines due to injury.
