Bullets say no awards for outstanding season

FCB Nyasa Bullets have said they will not hold a players’ awards ceremony for last season due to logistical challenges.

This is despite the club enjoying one of its most successful seasons in which they won the unprecedented quadruple.

The club’s chief administration officer Albert Chigoga has attributed the cancellation to logistics, especially the extension of last season to this year.

Chigoga: We didn’t have enough time to prepare

He said:  “We reached the finals of all the domestic competitions.

“The last competition, which was the  Airtel Top 8, was played in January 2024 which was  quite an unusual end of the season.

“Our plan was to hold the red carpet event in December 2023 before the players and coaches would proceed for the off-season holidays. We, therefore, felt that we didn’t have sufficient time to organise the function.”

Chigoga said they share the players’ disappointment about the failure to hold the awards, “especially after such a wonderful season”.

He said: “However, the postponement is one-off. The event will return at the end of the current season.”

The club’s legend Kinnah Phiri said it is unfortunate that the players will not be rewarded after one of the club’s best seasons.

“The reasons being given by the club  could be understandable, but considering the achievements, they still could have found a way,” he said.

During the club’s 2022 season awards, defender Gomezgani Chirwa was named player of the season, Precious Sambani won the defender of the season award, Ernest Petro received the midfielder of the season accolade, Patrick Mwaungulu was named the discovery of the season, Clever Mkungula was the best goalkeeper while Babatunde Adepoju won the top goal scorer award.

Three legends, namely, Kinnah, Kanjedza Kamwendo and Lawrence ‘Lule’ Waya were also honoured.

Meanwhile, Silver Strikers have also said they will not award outstanding players for last season.

In an interview, the club’s chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said: “Last year there were logistical challenges at the last minute that made us not to hold the awards.

“But as part of the Mika Greenland partnership, we were supposed to have the awards. Nevertheless, this year, be assured that we will have player awards.”

The only teams that held end of season awards were Civil Service United, newly-promoted Creck Sporting Club and Fomo FC.
