The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has urged candidates, political parties and the electorate to wind up their campaign for the August 25 Local Government By-elections at 6am tomorrow.

Mec will conduct the by-elections in Luchenza Ward, Zomba Central Ward, Msikisi Ward in Mangochi, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu and Khwawa Ward in Karonga.

In a statement released on Saturday, Mec’s chief elections officer, Willie Kalonga, reminded all stakeholders that it is violation of the electoral laws to campaign outside the stated period, warning they will face the due process of the law.

Said Kalonga; “Candidates and their supporters or agents will not be allowed to campaign or drive around hooting or with loud speakers playing campaign songs or any messages after the deadline.

“Media houses should also not broadcast or re-broadcast adverts, programmes or carry campaign news after the deadline.”

Kalonga has also urged leaders of various faith groups to avoid projecting candidates during their services.

Meanwhile, Kalonga has appealed to all those who registered to turn out in large numbers to elect their ward councillors on Tuesday, August 25. Voting is expected to start at 6am and end at 6pm.
