Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.

He said: “He will come to attend the inauguration of the tournament in his capacity as sponsor and the CAF president. The tournament is the first of its kind and the first zonal competition for the Motsepe Foundation in Cosafa.

“It will also be the first time if my memory serves me right, for a CAF president to visit Malawi. Only the Fifa president has ever visited Malawi. It’s a huge honour and privilege for Malawi to host him and the zonal competition.”

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said eight countries will participate in the competition.

He said: “Salima Secondary School will represent Malawi in the boys football category as national champions whereas Malindi Secondary School will take part in girls’ football.

“The tournament will be used as a dress rehearsal to assess the facilities which will host the Region 5 football tournament.”
