Calvary Kids sing louder

Their ages and appearance may be deceiving, but their conviction when singing is faultless. These are the new kids on the block operating as Calvary Kids Choir.

The youthful group is based at Calvary Family Church in Lilongwe and has 80 members aged between three and 11.

The Calvary Kids Choir have dropped their debut nine-track album Our Father, whose launch is slated for August 25 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

Impressive: The Calvary Kids Choir

When you watch the video of their title track, the youthful exuberance on display catches the eye. Their uniformed dancing and the choreography are refreshing. But when you watch Ndinu Mulungu, you get a sense of organisation and maturity beyond their ages.

The coordination displayed in the vocals and how the message in the song is relayed is both moving and enchanting. The projection in the vocals is done with fine masterly that speaks to one’s soul.

Meanwhile, the group has released four videos out of the nine songs, which are available on YouTube.

In an interview yesterday, matron of the group Chimwemwe Jere said the group was formed as a Sunday school outfit providing music during church services.

“The talent and music they have been doing is impressive. We thought limiting the church would be a great injustice to their artistic aspirations. By extension we thought this would also encourage other kids to be coming to church and parents to send their wards to church,” she said.

Jere said the group was formed in 2006 and transitioned as the members grew. She said the idea is to promote and build music talent of children from the Calvary Family Church.

She said: “They like the art as they have embraced it as a ministry and a service in the church. I believe they grow with a proper understanding and appreciation that their music is a ministry.”

Promoter and manager of the group, seasoned gospel musician Lloyd Phiri said the adaptability the kids have shown testifies to the potential they have to make it big in music. He said during recording sessions, they did not struggle to hit the right pitches and knots.

“Imagine recording a child whose height does not even reach the microphone. It is funny and at the same time special. But they did not struggle to catch the rhythm and beat. It is so amazing,” said Phiri.

Our Father album was recorded in three different studios; Lloyd Phiri’s One Heart Studio, Ituma Records.
