Canadian student boosts e-learning in Mulanje

Mulanje district director of education, youth and sports Enock Chumachawo says newly-established computer laboratory at Milonga and Chambe secondary schools will boost education standards in the district.

He said this on Saturday when 18-year-old Canadian student Sofie Roux through Otharkalaka Foundation donated a K100 million laboratory stocked with 21 laptop computers.

Chumachawo said the establishment of the Bloom Box Computer Lab means that four of the district’s 30 public secondary schools have access to computers and e-learning.

Mulanje and Providence secondary schools are other schools with access to computers.

“This is a great gift for our learners to improve their computer knowledge and access e-learning. We are grateful to Roux and Otharkalaka Foundation for this facility,” he said.

Roux, who has just completed secondary education in Canada, said she designed the solar-powered technology to help girls in Mulanje have access to quality education.

“I learned that most girls do not access quality education due to infrastructure barriers. The idea of the Bloom Box is to create a space where students can come and be creative together,” she said.

Otharkalaka Foundation executive director Aida Puliwa Mwango said the laboratory will enhance e-learning.
