Seventy-eight teams will compete in the K30 million (about $72 000) Carlsberg Cup which is expected to kick offon Tuesday at regional level.

Apart from the 15 Super League teams, the Southern Region has registered the highest number of teams (24), followed by the North which has 22 while the Centre has registered 17.

Speaking during a regional draw held at Chiwembe Technical Centre yesterday, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka said all the three regions were expected to register 24 teams each (all Premier League teams and the top four from First Division).

“But only the South registered the required number of teams whereas the North and Centre fell short by two and seven teams respectively.

“Nevertheless, we designed a draw that would suit the teams in the respected regions,” said Zakazaka.

He said three teams from each region will join the 15 top-flight league teams for the national phase and the draw is slated for June 9.

The most interesting draw was the one pitting Zomba United and their reserve side.

The three relegated teams from the Super League got fair draws. Mzuzu United face Lunyangwa Research, Evirom have been drawn against Green Hawks whereas Mponela United will take on Ntcheu United.

Winners will cart home K9 million (about $21 480). Kamuzu Barracks are the defending champions.
