CCJP urges traditional leaders to support women aspirants

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of Karonga Diocese has encouraged traditional and religious leaders in Traditional Authority Kameme in Chitipa District to empower women to participate in electoral processes.

CCJP gender coordinator Janet Mhango said religious and traditional leaders are crucial as they can influence women to participate in elections.

Kameme: We will sensitise our subjects

“After this orientation, we would like to see traditional and religious leaders working to ensure women play active roles in politics not only as voters but also as contestants in different positions,” she said.

Mhango said the orientation will help drive women to take up leadership positions at community level and mobilise the communities to vote for them in 2025 General Elections.

Senior Chief Kameme urged women aspirants to come forward and participate in the forthcoming general elections, saying men and women are equally key in fostering development in the area.

“As leaders, we will sensitise our subjects on the importance of registering and voting in next year’s general elections,” he said.

The Reverend Donja Mponela of Evangelical Lutheran Church described the orientation as timely.

He said as religious leaders, the orientation was important as they also play a role in strengthening unity and peace to ensure free and fair elections.

The diocese is implementing an election project in the district with funding from the United Nation Development Programme
