Bishop Bvumbwe for peaceful campaign
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi president Bishop Joseph Bvumbwe has called on politicians to run a peaceful campaign ahead of the September 16 2025 General Elections.
He said this on Sunday in Karonga District during the ordination of two priests of Karonga Diocese of the church.
Said Bvumbwe: “As a church, we are obliged to ensure that the people that we administer have basic needs that are affordable. They should not be subjected to suffering inflicted by selfish and careless leaders.
“In the same vein, we also monitor with keen interest to see that parties conduct issue-based campaign.”
In his homily, Bvumbwe asked the ordained priests to be humble, disciplined, dedicated and available at any time.
“The theme for this ordination is coming from Revelations Chapter Two verse 10 which encourages men of God to be faithful until death,” he said.
In an interview, one of the newly ordained priests Elijah Chomo said as men of God, they were ready for the challenge.
In separate interviews, a Karonga resident John Mbale hailed the bishop for reminding politicians to run a peaceful campaign.
He said it was high time politicians refrained from using emotive language during political rallies.
“It is not uncommon to see violence during campaign in Karonga. Memories are still fresh of political violence in Karonga Central in 2014. I appeal to my fellow youths not to be used by politicians to perpetrate violence,” said Mbale.
Malawi is going to the polls next year to elect president, members of Parliament and councillors.
