Centenary Bank partners Habitat for Humanity to build houses for cyclone survivors

Centenary Bank Limited has partnered Habitat for Humanity in Malawi to build houses for Cyclone Freddy survivors in Mulanje District.

The cyclone hit the country’s Southern Region in mid-March last year, killing more than 600 people, displacing thousands of them and destroyed infrastructure, including houses.

As part of the partnership, Centenary Bank has given Habitat for Humanity K2 million to contribute to the initiative of building houses for some of the survivors.

Speaking when he handed over the cheque, the bank’s acting managing director Godfrey Byekwaso said the gesture is in line with their mission of transforming lives through inclusive, convenient, simplified and sustainable financial solutions.

He said this also aligns with Habitat for Humanity’s commitment to improving lives across Malawi.

Said Byekwaso: “This collaboration marks a significant step in private sector involvement in disaster relief and community development in Malawi.

“It also highlights the growing trend of partnerships between financial institutions and non-governmental organisations in addressing critical social issues that need to be addressed.”

Habitat for Humanity in Malawi national director Victor Mhango thanked Centenary Bank for the support will xontribute towards the construction of 59 houses in Nanchindwa in the district.

“The provision of houses will be a great way to a sustainable pathway out of poverty for the affected families,” he said.

Mhango encouraged other companies to help in addressing challenges vulnerable communities face in the country.

Centenary Bank has previously partnered various organisations to support survivors of Cyclone Freddy through various initiatives.
