Chakwera, Chilima setfor Presidential Charity Golf

President Lazarus  Chakwera will partner Vizenge Kumwenda in VVIP Team 1 in  today’s Presidential Charity Golf Tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club.

The tournament is the President’s initiative aimed at raising funds for survivors of Cyclone Freddy and needy students from public universities.

Last Sunday, Chakwera trained at Mlambe Golf Course at Makokola Resort in Mangochi in preparation for the tournament and said he is eyeing prizes.

He said:  “This year, I am not only going to participate. I have set my eyes on the prizes.

“I have worked on my short game and putting. Let it be known to those taking part that there is a new golfer in town and  I will give them a good run for their money.”

Vice-President Saulos Chilima, an ardent golfer, will play alongside Kwanele Ngwenya in VVIP Team 2.

The tournament’s organising committee chairperson Gift Chidya Gondwe, who is also Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) president, said 31 teams are scheduled to take part in the day-long event, translating to at least 124 golfers.

He said the tournament will be played on two ball better ball stableford format and tee-off is at 9am through shotgun.

“The tournament will also provide us an ideal opportunity to meet potential sponsors and partners,” said Gondwe.

First Capital Bank (FCB) is the diamond sponsor, having pumped in K100 million.

Other sponsors include Reserve Bank of Malawi, Seedco, National Oil Company of Malawi, Airtel Malawi plc, TNM plc, Press Corporation, Salima Sugar Company, Ethco, Ecobank, Nico Group, Hallmark, Malawi Fertiliser  Company, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, Automotive Products Limited, National Bank of Malawi plc, Simama and Sons, Capital Oil Refining Industries, Hotel Victoria, Sawa Group, Standard Bank plc, Shayona,  Creck Hardware and Sunbird Hotels.
