The Scorchers on Friday maintained the unbeaten record after coming from behind to stun Mozambique 2-1 in a pulsating semi-final to set up a clash against the neighbours.

Chakwera said in the statement: “I am delighted to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you you for your incredible and remarkable achievements at the 2023 HollywoodBets Cosafa Women’s Championship.

“Your unwavering dedication and exceptional performance on the field have made the nation proud. Your outstanding display in the tournament is a testament to your hard work, talent , teamwork and resilience.

“Your triumphs have captured the hearts of the Malawian people and indeed the entire world.

“I commend your efforts and sportsmanship. I urge you to carry this spirit into the final as you take on Zambia. Know that the entire nation stands behind you, cheering for your success.”

But the battle for the final was not as easy as it was in the group stage where the free-scoring Scorchers stunned hosts South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3, e-Swatini 8-0 and Madagascar 3-1.

In the semis against Mozambique, the Scorchers for the first time at the tournament found themselves trailing 0-1 after conceding an own-goal in 38th minute.

However, China-based striker Temwa Chawinga struck twice in three minutes to hand Malawi the victory.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu doffed a hat for Temwa, whose sister Tabitha plays for PSG in France, for her outstanding performance.

Nyamilandu said: “Let’s give a bow to Temwa Chawinga. She is an explosive gem. Two goals in quick succession by Temwa were enough for the Scorchers to book a place in the finals against Zambia.

“This was the biggest test for the girls, who showed character to bounce back against Mozambique. We keep marching on. In God, we trust.”
