My Diary

Chakwera must tame the violent hyenas

July 3, 2025

Greetings from the Munda wa Chitedze Farm where I relocated from the hustle and bustle of your town. All is well and only peace reigns supreme here.

It is a week since we saw, with our naked eyes, overzealous zealots pouncing on a defenceless Sylvester Namiwa while he was leading demonstrations calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and chief elections officer Andrew Mpesi.

The barbaric acts of violence can’t be condoned in any way. Those sticks, chains, sjamboks and stones have no space in a democratic Malawi.

Yet, this is not a democratic Malawi, as far as those who have seen things from the middle of the wall can understand!

It is a Chakwera regime that is synonymous with non-challance and the unfaltering trampling of the people’s rights.

The principles of democracy are entrenched in giving others space to air their views, no matter how weird they may appear. You see, taking to the streets against the two is absurd, but beating to pulp those who engage in such form of expression is absurder, for want of a better expression.

Dear Diary, at the Munda wa Chitedze Farm, we thought the violent hyena would be taken away from the governing circus because it is keeping away the fun seekers. We thought the master would snap his whip on this vicious hyena to find other forms of entertaining the hangers-on.

In fact, we thought this violent tiger would be tamed with assurances from police Inspector General Merylne Yolamu. If police has dog handlers, how could they fail to tame violent and ruthless hyenas? We were wrong. Madam had better ideas.

Obviously, the order from above was that: Let them whip him to pulp! Just aid and abet as far as you can. Little did they know that cameras have irises!

What is even more painful is that seven days later, the police are still investigating the incident. What, actually, are they investigating? How do they investigate their own souls?

The repercussions of promoting violence are far-reaching. It is high time President Chakwera was seen to be doing something about taming this ferocious hyena. Tragedy has it that when you rear snakes, you should not cry the day they give you a jab of the venom from their spleen.

Dear Diary, this violent, fierce and vehement hyena Mr President is taming for this circus will cease to be fun when it gets really hungry.

By the way, how will the President tell those who may harbor thoughts of taming their own crocodiles and lions? Who will get hurt?

I had a dream, Dear Diary. I was at one of the gas stations. Fuel was hard to get. The women were complaining of scarcity of sugar, while their husbands were worried about the rising price of Viagra.

Then, all of a sudden, a Toyota Fortuner arrived. It screeched to a halt. Out came heavily built men in hoods and hats covering their faces from the light of the day. But, their hands were maimed. Some were cut at the wrists, others around the elbows. Yet others, Dear Diary, were disfigured by the shoulders.

They came towards me. They were shouting: “We have met Fodey Sanko and here we are. We passed by Nicaragua and Haiti, here we come. You have nowhere to run. Nowhere to run!”

Their teeth were like Dracula fangs. I tried to scream. I tried to run. I could not. Their eyes were shining as red as the October sun in Mangochi.

In my screaming, I woke to the rising sun. Funny things, dreams! I wish I had a vicious and violent hyena in that dream!
