Chakwera seeks Chitipa votes, hails health facility project

President Lazarus Chakwera has asked eligible voters in Chitipa to vote for him, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) parliamentarians and councillors to continue initiating development projects in the district.

The President was speaking on Monday at Chitipa Boma during a whistle stop tour ahead of the September 16 General Election.

Chakwera said his term of office experienced natural disasters, but did not stop him from developing the country.

“We have done so many developmental projects in the country using modern technology. We are constructing durable roads, railway lines, schools and hospitals like Nthalire Community Hospital, which we inaugurated,” he said.

MCP secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda commended the President for spending a night in Chitipa and boosting business in the process.

On Chitipa Stadium, Chimwendo Banda, who is Minister of Local Government, Culture and Unity, said the President has directed that the terraces should be completed.

Senior Chief Mwabulambya said Chakwera was the first sitting president to spend a night in the border district.

“You are a humble president for sleeping in Chitipa. You have made history,” he said.

Earlier, Chakwera inaugurated Nthalire Community Hospital in Traditional Authority Nthalire in the district.

In his speech, he commended partners such as Press Trust for complementing government’s efforts in promoting quality healthcare services in the country.

Press Trust board chairperson Sosten Gwengwe said his organisation invested over K1.2 billion to upgrade Nthalire Health Centre to a community hospital.

“We saw challenges people were facing to access secondary healthcare, especially pregnant women. That is why we came in to support construction of the community hospital,” he said.

Senior Chief Nthalire thanked government for upgrading the facility into a community hospital.

The hospital will serve 60 000 people and 1 500 pregnant women.
