Chakwera sells re-election bid to voters in Karonga
President Lazarus Chakwera says he remains committed to implementing development projects to uplift the socio-economic status of people, including Karonga District citizens.
He said this on Tuesday when he alongside his running mate Vitumbiko Mumba conducted seven whistle-stop tours to woo voters from the lakeshore district ahead of the September 16 General Election.
Immediately after inaugurating Kayelekera Uranium Mine, the President embarked on a tour in the district from Iponga in Karonga Songwe Constituency to Uliwa in Karonga South Constituency.

During the rallies, Chakwera, who is standing on Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ticket, justified his re-election.
He said: “I found Constituency Development Fund at K30 million and I hiked it to K100 million before I raised it to K220 million to enhance infrastructure development. When I am voted into power again, I will raise it to K500 million so that councils register meaningful development.
“As a means of empowering the youth and women economically, every district, 1 000 women will receive K1 million for small-scale enterprises.”
Chakwera said government has embarked on the rehabilitation of M1 from Lilongwe to Chiweta Hills in Rumphi via Mzuzu.
“This is a Northern Corridor road key to the country’s economic growth. We have also constructed water supply systems in Rumphi, Mzimba and Karonga districts to provide people with potable and clean water,” said Chakwera.
In his remarks, Paramount Chief Kyungu of Chitipa and Karonga districts thanked government for expanding the water supply system in Karonga.
“Therefore, I ask Your Excellency to extend the water project to Songwe Border Post to increase water accessibility,” he said.
MCP secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda urged the people of Karonga to vote for Chakwera, saying his administration constructed a dyke along the Rukuru River bank and rehabilitated rice schemes in the district as well as abolished quota system of selecting students to public universities.
