Change consumption habits—Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera has asked Malawians to change their habits and start producing more while cutting down on consumption to cushion themselves from economic hardships in the country.

In his address to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) second congregation in Blantyre yesterday, the President said consuming more while being non-productive was one factor worsening poverty levels in the country.

He said Malawi is at crossroads requiring people to choose between increasing production and reducing consumption or maintaining the status quo and perish.

Said Chakwera: “The behaviours of a citizen whose religion and philosophy of economics is consumption are quite evident. They include acting with entitlement with resources that belong to others; or refusing to do things for oneself that are within your power to do.”

Turning to the graduates, the President, who is Mubas Chancellor, urged them to be productive and engage in research on areas of production that are marketable to help create innovative solutions for the country.

Mubas vice-chancellor Associate Professor Nancy Chitera said her institution reviewed its curriculum and included innovation and entrepreneurship to change the mindset of both students and lecturers.

During yesterday’s congregation, 344 students who successfully completed their studies graduated with various certificates, diplomas and degrees. Out of the 344 graduates, 237 were male and 107 were female.
