Pandemonium broke near Polytechnic Annex along the Masauko Chipembere Highway in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, after a lorry belonging to a Construction company hit two  students as they crossed the road.

Angry students in turn set the vehicle on fire and blocked the highway.

Traffic lights at the scene have not been operational after soccer fans vandalised them when they were coming from a football match at the Kamuzu Stadium.

A witness said the girls, who had not yet been identified, were crossing from the Annex towards the main campus when the truck hit them. She said one was feared dead while the other was critically injured

Said the witness: “Students rushed upon hearing about the accident and immediately surrounded the lorry. They pushed it off road and set it on fire. They then blocked the road and stopped vehicles from going to and from Blantyre and Limbe.”

Southern Region Deputy Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa said the two girls’ condition was still unknown as we went to press, but said they were recorded as serious. She said their details were yet to be found.

They were taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
