The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the 2024 NBS Bank Charity Shield match between FCB Nyasa Bullets and Silver Strikers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday raised K43.6 million as net revenue.

Bullets won the match 7-6 on post-match penalties after the two teams played out a goalless draw in regulation time.

A statement from FAM released yesterday says the gross revenue was K88.4 million, including K40 million sponsorship from NBS Bank plc.

According to the expenditure report, about K13.81 million went towards the two teams’ expenses, including logistics and accommodation; K8.8 million catered for the teams’ equipment, branding and medals.

About K7.78 million went towards ground levy while K4.6 million went towards security, among other costs.

Part of the statement reads: “The K43.6 million is 114 percent higher than the K20.4 million raised in 2023 and the highest since the Charity Shield was introduced in 2016.

“It is pleasing to note that the Charity Shield revenue continues to increase every year which is encouraging for the sponsor and FAM to channel the proceeds towards community projects with a great social impact.”

In an interview yesterday, FAM marketing and broadcasting manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe described this year’s event as “a great success”.

He said this year’s proceeds will be invested in the education sector whereby NBS Bank plc and FAM, through their technical implementing partners, will construct sanitary facilities at yet to be identified primary schools in the Central Region.

FAM has since thanked NBS Bank for doubling this year’s sponsorship to K40 million.

“We would also like to thank participating teams, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers FC, the fans and media for the support rendered to make this project a success,” the statement further reads.
