Chiefs in Chikwawa and Nsanje have teamed up to promote Covid-19 vaccination in the districts.

In an interview on Monday, Senior Chief Ngabu of Chikwawa said traditional leaders should encourage their subjects to get vaccinated against the pandemic.

“Countries where their citizens have received the vaccination are free from wearing face masks. Let us mobilise more people for the vaccination to achieve herd immunity,” he said.

In a separate interview, Senior Chief Malemia of Nsanje also urged people in the district to get their jabs.

“We know Nsanje is doing well in Covid-19 vaccination, but I urge people to get vaccinated to boost their immunity,” he said.

Chikwawa District Health Office spokesperson Settie Piriminta said with the support from the chiefs, more people are getting vaccinated.

A health surveillance assistant based at Jombo in Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa, Gloria Phiri-Gela said they are vaccinating over 50 people a day.

“We thank village heads Jombo and Lyton for mobilising their subjects to get vaccinated,” she said.

One of the people who received his jab, Felix Kelemisi, from Kudziwa Village in the area, said he got vaccinated because traditional leaders convinced him.

“The chiefs cleared the myths and misconceptions surrounding the Covid-19 vaccine,” he said.
