Chikwawa residents urged to embrace saving culture

Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) Malawi education officer Gregory Chimndozi has urged communities in Senior Chief Chapananga in Chikwawa District to embrace a saving culture.

He said this on Wednesday at group village head Sezu during a meeting with people affected by the railway construction project.

Chimndozi said they facilitated the formation of village savings and loans (VSLs) groups with support from Nacala Logistics to empower people economically.

“We established 10 village savings and loans groups to inculcate a saving culture among people. We are pleased that people are accumulating assets through using the dividends from the groups,” he said.

GVH Sezu commended Dapp Malawi and Nacala Logistics for empowering his subjects financially.

“The village savings and loans groups have helped people save money to buy basic necessities,” he said.

Kanjoka VSL Group member Frank Cham’manja said she constructed a decent house using the savings from the group.

“Since joining the VSL group in 2018, my family has transformed. I am able to buy basic necessities and pay school fees for my children,” she said.

Kasupe VSL Group member Idah James asked for more refresher courses on financial management.

Since 2018, Nacala Logistics through Dapp Malawi has been supporting households that were affected with the construction of Nacala Corridor in Chikwawa, Mwanza, Neno, Balaka and Machinga districts.
