Silver Stadium grosses record K33m

Sunday’s TNM Super League match between Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe  grossed K33.5 million.

Silver Strikers Company Limited chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said the figure was an all-time record at the stadium.

The two teams and stadium owners got about K7 million each, totalling K21 million.

Chimimba: It could
have been more

However, Chimimba said the gross could have been more had it not been for other logistical challenges.

He said: “Actually, we could have made more, but there were lapses in security that led to some people breaking the gates on more than three occasions.”

Chimimba also attributed the record revenue to aggressive pre-sale of tickets.

He said: “The pre-sale of tickets alone generated about K11 million and this demonstrates that people are now embracing the system.

“Secondly, it is because the two teams’ performances are attracting more people to patronise their matches.”

In a separate interview, Wanderers national supporters committee secretary general Dave Pemba said there was a lot of hype prior to the match, which led to the huge turnout.

He said: “Before the match, both teams were among the three that had not yet lostand considering their status, the big turnout was expected.

“Apart from that, aggressive marketing also contributed to the big turnout.”

Silver, who lead the 16-team league with 19 points from seven matches, won the match 2-0 to hand the Nomads their first defeat of the season.

On the other hand, Wanderers are fourth with 12 points also from seven games.
