China donates Covid-19 PPEs to Cham

The Chinese Government has donated face masks and hospital caps to Christian Health Association of Malawi (Cham) to help in the fight against coronavirus.

Speaking on Monday after donating 5 000 face masks and 2 500 hospital caps to Cham officials, Chinese Deputy Ambassador Wang Xinsheng said his government is keen to see to the pandemic, which has killed many within months, defeated.

He said: “We are doing all we can as China to curb the pandemic. We would like to share our experience with the world as the country where the disease was first reported. We are thankful to people for their assistance and in return we would like to help other people fight the virus. That is why even our entrepreneurs are donating Personal Protective Equipment’s (PPE),” He said.

On December 31 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) was alerted of several cases of pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. World Health Organisation declared coronavirus a pandemic on March 12 2020.

On March 20 2020, Covid-19 was declared a National Disaster in Malawi and on April 2 2020 the country registered its first three cases of Covid-19.

But health workers in the country have bemoaned the lack of PPEs, which did not spare Cham hospitals.

Receiving the donation, Cham executive director Happy Makala said the equipment be distributed among some of the 179 facilities they operate nationwide.

Cham is an ecumenical umbrella association which caters for 30 percent of service provision of healthcare in Malawi.
