China gives Judiciary complex K50bn boost

Malawi and China have signed a K50 billion (RMB 200 million) grant financing agreement for the construction of the Judiciary complex in Lilongwe.

The ceremony was held on Tuesday evening in Beijing, China hours after President Lazarus Chakwera and his delegation held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Simplex Chithyola Banda, who signed on behalf of the Malawi Government, quoted President Xi as having announced the package in his address to the Malawi delegation.

“The Malawi Government, through President Chakwera, promised Malawians the Judiciary complex in Lilongwe and today we are witnessing the realisation of the same,” said the minister.

Chithyola Banda said his ministry will work closely with China to fast-track disbursement of the funds so that construction of the complex is done on time. 

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Long Zhou signed on behalf of his government and said he would ensure that the project runs as expected and relations between the two countries “grow from strength to strength”.

Ground works on the construction of the complex are underway with funding from the Government of Malawi.

The Judiciary complex at City Centre will stand opposite Parliament Building which was also funded by China just like Umodzi Park comprising The President Hotel, Bingu International Convention Centre, Malawi Square and Presidential Villas.

China, which also financed construction of Bingu National Stadium and Malawi University of Science and Technology, is currently supporting the expansion of the M1 into a dual carriageway from Crossroads Roundabout to Kanengo in Lilongwe.
