NBS Bank boosts Presidential Golf with K155m
President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday hailed NBS Bank plc for donating K155 million towards the 2024 Presidential Charity Golf Initiative scheduled for October 11 and 12 at Country Club Limbe in Blantyre.
Proceeds from this initiative will go towards supporting victims of tropical cyclones and needy university students.
Speaking at the official unveiling of NBS Bank plc as the diamond anchor sponsor of the initiative at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, the President lauded the bank’s commitment towards social responsibility.
Chakwera said his administration is already channelling resources into both the reconstruction efforts to rehabilitate communities devastated by last year’s Cyclone Freddy and education for needy students in public universities, including a substantial increase in the allocation of per diems.
Said the President: “NBS Bank has shown that it is not just a financial institution, but a human one.”
This year, the organisers are targeting to raise K600 million. The tournament, which was launched in 2022, raised K220 million in its inaugural year and K411 million last year.
NBS Bank plc deputy chief executive officer Temwani Simwaka said they are delighted with their involvement in national initiatives that improve the lives of underprivileged Malawians.
Simwaka cited the bank’s various charitable activities, including collaborations with the Football Association of Malawi in the Charity Shield, building houses in Chiladzulu for Cyclone Freddy victims, girl child mentorship programmes and support for university students.
She said: “We realise that the cause is the same and, therefore, it was very easy for us to join hands with the Presidential Charity Golf Initiative and at the same time lead in terms of the private sector presence.
“As a Malawian bank, we believe it is our responsibility to help in driving the private sector to partner in causes of this nature.”
