Cobbe Barracks are this week’s leaders of the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Premier Division after displacing Chikhwawa United.

Impressive 5-0 hammering of Mwanza Eagles on Sunday, a day after losing 1-0 to Prison United, has Cobbe leading the 19-member standings on 36 points from 15 first-round games.

Long-time pacesetters Chikhwawa United are second on 35 points after beating Ndirande Icons 1-0, then Brave Warriors 5-0 on Saturday and Sunday respectively at BAT ground.

Ian Banda and Dave Chadewa’s each brace and Masautso Mwale’s goals sealed Chikhwawa’s win on Sunday.

The Warriors had the previous day beaten third-placed Nyasa 1-0 through Adam Haji strike. On Sunday, Nyasa went on to draw 2-2 with Icons at the same venue.

Ex-MTL Wanderers midfielder Tendai Mbisa volleyed in a last gasp equaliser for Nyasa. Mphatso Zolimba and Tamimu Mudimu had scored for Icons before Elard Chigwetsa reduced the arrears at BAT.

In post-match interview, Nyasa co-coach Rodgers Yasini said he was unhappy with the weekend results as he wants his side to transform from being relegation candidates to pursuers of honours.

“There is no consistency. Some three players who featured on Saturday did not turn up today [Sunday]. Some have their own commitments, others are injured,” said Yasini who coaches the veterans alongside John Phiri, a Bata Bullets former star.
